Mankayane – Each and every year, the Board recognizes those who participate in volunteer activities that benefit the citizens of Mankayane Town. This group of volunteers plays a pivotal role in showing love and providing hope and comfort to the local communities.
On December 16, 2022, the Board hosted a Volunteer Appreciation Session at the Board’s conference room to convey their gratitude to the volunteers for the immense work that they have been doing and continue to do for the under-privileged in town.
The Board gifted the volunteers with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Grocery Vouchers as a gesture of appreciation, and further pledged to continue budgeting for their refresher courses and empowering them with skills that will enhance their livelihood. Some of these volunteers joined the program back in 2004 and continue to serve the town through the three centres the Board has.
Below is a summary of how the centres service the communities in town:
- Provide a feeding program (1 meal per day).
- Provide monthly growth monitoring for children below 5 years at the social centre.
- Provide vaccination and deworming services at the social centres with support from the Mankayane Public Unit.
- Provide Early Childhood Development Program (ECDE).
- Educate adolescents on life skills and personal development.
- Provide home visits/follow ups of the terminally ill residents and social centre beneficiaries.
The Interim Vice Chairman, Councillor Cyril Kunene lauded the great work and commitment that the volunteers willingly contribute for the greater benefit of the local communities. He commended them that not only do they provide the various services to the beneficiaries, but they do it with love and passion to bring change within the local communities.
