95 OF 500 TREES PLANTED AROUND TOWN

Environmental sustainability remains one of the core mandates for local authorities while transitioning towards a low carbon economy, climate change adaptation and ecosystems preservation and restoration. One of the many ways of sustaining the environment is through the planting of trees.

On the 22nd April 2022, Mankayane Town Board and her partners collaborated in the planting of 95 trees in one day around Mankayane Town. This was done in support of the ‘Plant A Tree and Save The Environment’ campaign, an initiative by the Ministry of Tourism and Environmental Affairs launched by the late Prime Minister Ambrose Mandvulo Dlamini on the 24th September 2020.

The Board has heeded the national call of planting 10 million trees between 2020 and 2025, as it has put in place a plan to plant a total of 500 indigenous and non-indigenous trees within the urban spaces by the end of the year 2022. Some of the 95 tree species that were planted include: Cape Ash Tree (Umnyatsi), Corral Tree (Umsinsi), Fever Tree (Umkhanyakude), Royal Palm Tree, Queen Palm Tree, Triangular, Monkey Tree and Fox Tail.

Environmental Sustainability encourages revitalisation and transition of urban areas to improve liveability, promote innovation and reduce environmental impacts, all while maximising economic and social co-benefits. It is on this regard that the Town Board urges more stakeholders to follow suite as this project and goal can only be achieved through a joint effort.
