Public Health and Environment
The principal purpose of the department is to ensure safety of all food offered and consumed within the urban area, safety of all trade practices, and environmental health and sustainability in all operations and development programs within the jurisdiction of the local authority.
The Environmental Health Department is responsible for protecting and improving the health of the people of Mankayane and the quality of the environment. The department services comprise those aspects of human health, including quality of life, that are determined by physical, chemical, biological, social and psychosocial factors in the environment.
The department is also committed to the practice of assessing, correcting, controlling and preventing factors that are likely to become environmental health hazards for Mankayane people. It aims at ensuring sustainable development by integrating public health and environmental issues in the development of the town and implementing COVID-19 strategy.
The department is also tasked with implementing Environmental Health programs and projects as outlined in the 2020-2030 Integrated Development Plan.
Specific duties and functions
- Ensuring the promotion of a consistent high standard of public health and aesthetics within the town.
- Inspection of premises for nuisance abatement.
- Providing and promoting safe and livable conditions in business premises and practices.
- Ensures that public is protected from physical, chemical and biological hazards.
- Collection, management and appropriate disposal of all forms of waste within town.

Environmental Management of Projects
- Conducting inspections and compile reports for projects within the urban area.
- Investigating environmental pollutants.
- Identifying overgrown plots and serve notices to owners of the overgrown plots.
Community Environmental Health
- Community environmental health management.
- Provide advice and safety on all community supplies.
- Design and develop public information campaigns.
- Provide advice and services to maintain environmental health standards in support of disaster preparedness and recovery.

Strategy Implementation
- Environmental conservation by developing and implementing environmental conservation / rehabilitation plan / eradicating alien and invasive plant species and protecting culturally and environmentally sensitive areas.

- Conducting non-food outlets inspections for issuance of trading licenses.
Environmental Awareness Programs
- Liaising with the Eswatini Environment Authority on Environmental issues.
- Dissemination of information to public.
- Planning and implementation of Environmental Management programmes and projects.
Conducting Environmental Inspections
- Inspecting new buildings and make recommendations before issuance of occupation certificates.
- Conducting safety, Health and Environmental Inspections and compliance.
Public Health
- Inspections of food outlets.
- Grading of food outlets.
- Serving food outlets with notices.
- Nuisance abatement.
- Executing activities aimed at poverty alleviation and community development.
- Developing strategies and implementing them to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and all other communicable and non-communicable diseases within the urban area.
Solid Waste Management
- Street Cleansing- In the quest to keep Mankayane clean, on a daily basis our work force picks litter along all the streets of Mankayane. This is then disposed of at the controlled waste disposal facility.
- Installation of pedestrians’ litter bins strategically around the town to curb littering.
- Proper management of hazardous waste
- Provision of public convenience services (provision of public toilets).
